Cairns & Gold Coast
Two very different vibes on the tropical end of Australia. Cairns is the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest — rugged, natural, and adventure-focused. The Gold Coast is surf culture, theme parks, and nightlife. Both are worth your time.
Cairns
Tips
- Motion sickness pills. The boat to the Great Barrier Reef takes about 2 hours each way, and it gets rough. Bring two pills — one for the way out, one for the return. Tours sell them onboard for $8–10 AUD, but bring your own.
- Get dive-certified before you go. If you try to get certified on the boat and fail, some operators won't let you switch to snorkeling. This happened on our trip and it's common.
- The reef is alive. Don't believe the doom and gloom entirely. Online photos exaggerate the color vibrancy — colors appear darker unless the light hits perfectly — but the marine life is incredible. You might even spot a shark.
Things to Do
- ★ Great Barrier Reef (Snorkeling or Diving) — The main event. Book a full-day tour. Respect the reef.
- Cairns Esplanade Lagoon — A massive public swimming pool with ocean views. Great for lounging in the main tourist area.
- Daintree Rainforest — Didn't make it personally, but it's highly recommended by everyone.
Food & Drink
- ★ Prawn Stars — A floating seafood restaurant on the wharf. Book ahead if you can. Massive seafood platters.
- Salt House — Small plates and shareables are the move here. The mac and cheese, kingfish sashimi, and tiger prawns stood out. Skip the mains.
Gold Coast
A top tropical destination — think surfing, beach vibes, nightlife, and theme parks. If you've been to Hawaii or Cancún, the Gold Coast hits similar notes but with an Australian twist.

- Surfer's Paradise — The heart of Gold Coast beach culture. Surfing, dining, shopping, nightlife.
- Broadbeach — Trendy area with a more relaxed vibe. Great cafes and boutiques.
- Movieworld — Movie-themed rides, shows, and attractions.
- Dreamworld — Thrill rides, animal encounters, and family-friendly attractions.
Food & Drink
- ★ Nicholini's Italian — Solid Italian in a cozy setting.
- Rumi's — Mediterranean flavors, vibrant dishes.
- Hakata Ramen — Authentic ramen with flavorful broths. Great after a day at the beach.
